If you haven't looked at Remington 870s yet, it would be a good idea. If you want the most versatile setup, they're definitely the best choice, where you can get one action and be able to take 3.5" super magnums, use a short 18" barrel for home defense, use a rifled barrel for slugs, and use whatever length of magazine extension you wish. With the Mossberg 500 the mag lengths are set at 5, and with the 590 they only make cylinder barrels for tactical use. The Win 1300 Defender can only take a short smooth barrel or a longer 22" one for competition with chokes.

That said, if rifled barrels are not on the menu, you can get longer sporting barrels for both the 8-shot 500 and the Win 1300 Defender. And on the defender, you MAY be able to use other sporting barrels with a freakish conversion I had in mind... ;)

Winchester 1300 Practical Defender, 22" barrel, Win-chokes

Maverick 88 8-shot (similar to Moss 500, same barrel, different safety) 28" barrel available with Accu-set Choke

Rem 870 Express

Rem 870 Express Super Magnum (would require an aftermarket mag extension if you want one, but will take all 3" 870 barrels)

Great to see you around, Uncle Red! Glad your M500 is treating you well! I considered getting one as an all around hunting gun (I've had one before and still have a barrel laying around.) Main reason I ruled it out is that all the rifled barrels are ported. I can take recoil, but I really don't like porting.
