I recently picked up a CMP Garand at the north store and am quite pleased with it. While at a gun show I found a walnut stock, just the stock w/out hand guards, that was in great shape for $35 so I picked it up. I am having trouble fitting it to my Garand. It fits fairly well, but when I try to lock in the trigger group, I can't pivot the trigger guard all the way into the locked position. Aside from having a slight gap between the bottom of the receiver that is exposed above the stock and the top of the stock, which should be eliminated if the trigger guard locks down, it fits great. Has anyone had a similar problem? Are there certain measurements that the stock should be? I just want be cautious before I start sanding away.

You should NOT need to do any fitting for a USGI stock.
If it a commercial stock it "may" require some fitting.
Alot of guys are used to a trigger gaurd closing real easy because either their stock is compressed or trigger gaurd lugs are worn
They get a new or differnt stock that fits correctly and are afraid to put force on the trigger gaurd to close it as you are supposed to

I fit as many as 10 stock sets a week and Orlando's advice is where you should start. In fact, I recommend you place the butt of the rifle on a padded bench or blanket and slap the trigger guard close. (Like Orlando said, first appl a little grease to the trigger lugs.)

Not sure what part of Northern IL you're at, but next spring the Beloit, WI will have CMP instruction by a CMP trainer, and also monthly CMP shots. The training class is usually in late March, with a match right after the class. The following month's shoots are usually mid month, with no shoot in July..
Something to think about while ice fishing..
never been to a match shoot! Im here in northwest subs of Chicago (buffalo grove)
I am always lookin for a partner for icefishing when the weather turns as it did.
I can imagine we will at least safe ice in the next day or two with the cold.
I have always looked forward to the winter months but not this early!
We have almost safe ice on inland channels and small lakes this early!

I'm still digging out from the snow.. Over a foot, and I just got home last night, so that wet snow is now ice at ground level and not much fun at any level.. :grumble:
AND, my snowblower has pretty much given up the ghost.. Old 2 stroker that won't operate at a normal speed.. Either super fast, super slow, and the clutch is fried, as well as the beaters and the bearings for the beaters.. I bought it well used years ago, so I think it's time to retire it to someone who wants to mess with it, and buy a new RELIABLE unit..
I'm much more comfortable on 4" of ice than new ice.. And there's nothing like bluegills caught through the ice!!
Dang, now you are making me start thinking about an ice fishing set up! Especially now that I live more inland than I used to.
I've reheated bacon over a Coleman lantern while ice fishing..
And, just to take this about as far from topic as possible, can someone tell me why peppermint schnaaps can sit in my freezer all summer long and after the first snow I can't wait to get it out and have a (or few) fingers of it in cold glass??:11:

No safe ice in Centarl Ohio yet . Its been in the teens all week but supposed to warm up in the high 40's next week here.
I have been slacking in the ice fishing last few years, gotta get back at it though.
We have a lake here that produces good saugeyes, my buddy took one over 6 lbs a couple years ago.
Nothing like a saugeye like that coming out of a mud hole. Average depth in the lake probably only runs 5 ft
