I don't think you can go wrong with either rifle. My choice would depend on my budget. I would choose the Tikka if I had the cash reserved to top it with decent glass. But, if it would only leave me with Barska quality optics to mount on the Tikka I would choose the American and put better glass on it. JMHO.

 

Tikka is the best out of the box. The fins know how to make a rifle

 

Might want to contemplate the Marlin X7-VH in .308, also available in Canada, priced lower than both...
and tends to be more precise

 

Have had two tikkas. Great rifles. Bolt smooth as glass. Awesome triggers.

 

I've heard great things about the RAR. Also, from seeing/holding one at a retailer its very sleek, lightweight, and natural in the hands.

I bought the Ruger. I couldn't see enough difference to justify the extra $200 for the Tikka.

 

Well? How does it shoot? How do you like it?

 

It really likes Federal Fusion 7mm08 at 120 grs. I can shoot a group that touches at 100 yds with a 4X scope. The trigger is better than most reviewers give credit for. The bolt works smoothly. It fits me well and is comfortable to shoot. I am very pleased.

If it were my buying the gun I would buy the Tikka without much thought. You are comparing a higher end product to an entry level product which isn't much of a comparison.
