I'm working on 45 Colt. My problem is primer pockets seem to be different sizes. I bought a RCBS primer tool, bench model. My problem is hen I go to seat primers. When I go to seat some pieces primers can get screwed up and its impossable to get case out of shell holder. I have to take primer tool apart to get stuck primer out. Are there different to seat primers. I've been using large pistol primers and looking at primer pockets there seem to be different sizes primers.

There are only 4 standard primers. Small and large rifle and small and large pistol. I load a lot of 45 Colt, we have 5 handguns and one lever action. All take large pistol.

I use the Lee hand priming tool, one 4-5 years old the other maybe 40 years old. Hand priming is the only way you know if there is a problem, such as smashing a primer, it going in sideways or upside down.

The problem with hand primers if you have to be certain you have the proper primer device for that size of primer. Since I have two sets, I just leave one set up for large and one set up for small. That way my feeble vision does not have to fumble around with them.

I use CCI more than any but recently could only find Winchester and Federal. They all work fine. What I have noticed is that sometimes a box will seem harder to seat than another brand. But using the hand primer solves all of that.

Since the brass is new to you, I would use a primer pocket tool on them one time, or like dealing with military brass you can just run a pocket knife around the edge to insure there is no crimp or small burr around the edge of the primer pocket. That one time handling of each case will prevent any delays when you are reloading.

I have not had any issues with loading the 45 Colt. Kind of like loading a 38 Special, just bigger.

I was LEO for 22 years county nest to Atlanta and in mid 70s they gave us Smith revolver in 45 Colt. I told them who said there is no God. Only firearm they let us buy, I Jumped it like a June Bug. Started our with 38 Smiths. After my 45 they issued 92fs. Hated that 9mm, like my bullets big and slow with great knock down. They put us through shoot dont shoot videos with live ammo. Never will forget my turn, audio said I received a call suspicious person in a ware house. At the ready perp came running from left side of screen shooting pow pow pow. I unloaded on him he went behind a counter pow pow pow. I again unloaded on him. I holstered and another clown came running from left side of screen, pow pow. I drew and revolver went click click clink. I never have forgotten it.

Smith and Wesson once made a stainless snub nose N frame in 45 Colt, some version of the model 25. I think it also fired 45 acp on moon clips, Always wanted one of those.

I have the Governor that fires the 410, 45 Colt, and 45 acp which is simply fun and practical, but it is huge. I also shoot 45 Colt in the single actions, so I load quite a few of them.

We can talk all the ballistics we want, but a .45 cal hole never gets any smaller, and a 250 grain bullet does not slow down much in animals or humans. Like the 45 acp, it always makes a predictable impact. I love the zippy little 9mm but you just never know how many it will take... most gun fight winners are determined by exactly one round, the first one that hits, yours or theirs...just. saying.

I have a bunch of brass primed and ready, some new some old, maybe I can load some today after I go vote. I have one Bisley Ruger I load the Ruger only load in them. I bought some Starline nickel plated cases and only load jacketed bullets for that one. The shiny cases help me keep them separate.

Love the big 45.
