Don't know about the internet, but I have a book. I have been pretty successful in finding dates for old Smiths. Tell me the caliber, identifying marks, serial number. Leave out the last couple of digits if you like, but include x's. Like 1234xxx. I need to know how many digits in the serial number to do this right. Top break or swing-out? A picture is very helpful.

Hi I have my Dad's old service revolver he became a Police officer in 1950. so I would guess it is from that era
it is a S&W model 10 38 special

the number on the bottom is 114xxx the number on the back of the cyclinder is "c" a space and 114xxx
inside the swing joint are the numbers 2020 a space and another number 2

it would be nice to know the manufacturing date Thanks for any help bill (acura46)

Not enough info, need photo and serial number.
Just about every S&W fits your description.
Look for serial on bottom of grip.

More then likely it is a Model 10.
The Latin "Marcas Registradas" was stamped to help combat foreign clones.
By letting customer know it was a original S&W.
As M-14 man stated look on the bottom of the grip for the SN.
And post the # for cross reference.

Revolver I.D.

I have a S&W .38 Special. I believe its a model 10 and it is a 5 screw, tapered barrel, and rounded blade front sight. The serial number is 971,4xx. Any thoughts on the age of this revolver?

Thanks

Andrew, it would appear to be a ".38 Military and Police, Model 1905-4th change.
This was pre Model 10.
Serial numbers per year were not strictly kept.
Yours appears to be made 1944-45.

Thanks

I appreciate your quick response. We're enjoying the gun. Its got a nice tight action and probably 75 to 80% bluing. Its a great conversation piece and your suggestion of a pre mod 10 makes some sense based on our inability to match the model with known serial number ranges. We may look into getting a factory letter to narrow it down and enjoy the gun's history a little more.

Thanks!

I am positive that is what it is...Most "Model 10's" have an alpha charcter in the serial. The 38 M&P were the predecessors to the 10.

Andrew,

A BIG welcome to G&G. There are some great knowledgeable people here. Stick around and enjoy. M14Man pretty much nailed it on your Smith with the serial number you gave. You have a pretty cool firearm as during the war, most pre model 10’s were Victory models (with a V prefix in the SN) produced for the war effort. Yours was a civilian version which were few and far between as the war trumped civilian use.

Definitely letter this intriguing weapon, as it will tell you the configuration how it left the factory, i.e. barrel length, type grips etc. as well as where it was shipped. My guess is that it has a six inch barrel and wood checkered grips. Congrats of this fine revolver. Please send some pictures and a range report. Again, welcome to Gun and Game-enjoy-Phil

Hello,
I ran through this thread and gathered some hope.
I'm from Norway and here we have very strictly armour regulations.
After 6 months regularly rookie shooting, and safety training, I finally was approved to own my own weapon.
My first revolver was purchased in December 2016 was a really nice jewel.
It's a 586-3 etch engraved.
It had never been fired, and the previous owner had kept it in a safe for decades.
I just had to take it there and then.
The price was maybe too much, but it was in mint condition.
NOK 15.000,- about us$ 1.400,-
May any one help me with the serial number and convert it into a delivery day?

My book does not show an AAE prefix for any model 64's.
Are you sure it is not a 686?
Their AAE is mid 1981

Well maybe the book is not as model specific as assumed.
Maybe someone has a different source.
Did you try online?
Like I mentioned S&W used that AAE mid Oct 1981 in my book.

I have looked a little bit of everywhere but have not been able to find anything...
Oh well - thanks for your help, maybe someone else will have additional information.
